Hari Ambadas Gade graduated in science in 1938 from the University of Nagpur, and enrolled the following year at the Nagpur School of Art as a casual student. He finished his Diploma in Art in 1949 and a Masters in Art in 1950. He was one of the six founder members of the Progressive Artists' Group and remained a member until the group was dissolved in 1956. Two years later he joined the Central Institute of Education.

Gade participated in several group shows of the Progressive Artists in Mumbai, Baroda, Ahmedabad and Calcutta. He participated in the Stanford University exhibition in 1949, the Venice Biennale in 1954 and the Indian Art Exhibition which toured east Europe in 1955-56. He won a gold medal at the annual exhibition of the Bombay Art Society in 1956. He also exhibited at Basle in 1951 and 1956 and in Venice in 1957.
