Particle Physics: Autumn 2006

• The final exam will be on Friday Jan 12, starting at 2 pm (Date and time still tentative).

  It will be open book (you can use any books / notes / reference material) and virtually infinite time. Of course within reasonable bounds.

• Presentations will be tentatively on Thursday Jan 25, starting at 2 pm (Date and time still tentative). They will be half an hour each.

  The suggested topics for the presentations are given below. You may even choose any topic outside these with the consent of the instructors. The presentations are expected to have a lot of emphasis on the experimental techniques, and the student should be familiar with the relevant theoretical matter. You may consult with the instructors about the details.

  1. Measurement of neutrino helicity from Goldhaber's experiment
  2. Discovery of CP violation in K-Kbar mixing (1964)
  3. Air showers: detection techniques
  4. The discovery of gluon
  5. Measuring the decay width of Z at the L3 experiment
  6. Solar neutrino detection at SNO
  7. Atmospheric neutrino detection at SuperKamiokande
  8. CMS detector and the search for the Higgs
  9. Construction and performance of the electromagnetic calorimeter in CMS

  Please send your first three choices to amol@tifr.res.in, and you'll be assigned one of those (as long as all your choices have not been taken up already). The assignment of topics will be on the first come first served basis.
