Evolution of Random Fields

This is a view of time evolution of relativistic classical scalar fields in 2 space and 1 time dimension with a Mexican-hat potential. The evolution is carried out in a periodic box of unit size (lengths and times are in units of the mass of the Higgs field). Initially the Fourier components of the fields are distributed as independent Gaussian random numbers. The pictures show spatial power spectra of the difference of the initial field value and that at times 1/2 and 1. The formation of bands is due to a process similar to parametric resonance.
