Prof. Durga Prasad Roy was a pioneer in the field of particle physics in India, especially in the physics of High energy colliding beam machines. He worked at TIFR for more than four decades. This series of Memorial Lectures was made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Manika Roy and the family of the late Prof. Roy.

Landscapes of Fundamental Physics

The Standard Model of Elementary-Particle Physics describes the laws of Nature in the microcosm with astounding accuracy. However, astrophysical observations of the Universe as well as theoretical considerations hint at the existence of “hidden sectors” of physics, containing the Dark Matter as well as other new particles and interactions not yet discovered. The exploration of this “new physics” is one of the grand scientific challenges of the century. In this lecture, I will describe the successes and limitations of the Standard Model, discuss avenues to find hints of physics that lies beyond it, and emphasize the need for a comprehensive and complementary search program including the high-energy, low-energy, and cosmic frontiers. I will also show that research in fundamental physics has and will always lead to technological spin-offs, which have advanced mankind in unforeseeable ways.

Prof. Matthias Neubert

Matthias Neubert has been a Professor for Theoretical High-Energy Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University since 2006 and has been appointed Founding Director of the Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) in 2012. His research lies in theoretical elementary-particle physics, with a focus on quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and collider physics, flavor physics and charge-parity violation, effective field theories and physics beyond the Standard Model. He has published more than 300 scientific papers. Since 2012, Neubert serves as Spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+ (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure Matter) at Johannes Gutenberg University. 

Neubert is a Member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, a Corresponding Member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In recognition of his research, he received several awards, including the Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2005) and the J. Hans D. Jensen Award from the Klaus Tschira Foundation (2010 and 2015). In 2011 and 2023, he obtained Advanced Grants of the European Research Council (ERC).
