| Abstract: | I will discuss the results of a recent article by Y. Ran, Y.Zhang and A.Vishwanath (DOI: 10.1038/NPHYS1220) on 1-D topologically protected modes in topological insulators with lattice dislocations. I will start with a short introduction to general idea of topological defects and topological insulators and specialty of them. Then I will follow the article and discuss how dislocation lines are associated with 1-D fermionic excitations in a 'topological insulators' a novel phase of matter and how this modes are topologically protected without being scattered by disorder. Which will lead to a discussion of experimental consequences of creating a potentially ideal quantum wire in a bulk solid. |
