Basic Information
Fonts and Software
- Proprietary:
- C-DAC, Pune:
Unix, DOS, Windows, Mac;
a range of wordprocessing and related software.
- Deodars Devanagari:
TrueType and Type 1 for Windows;
356 characters, originally designed for Sanskrit (cost $50+).
- Hindi Guru
Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or later;
Teaches how to read and write Hindi; contains grammar, dictionary
encyclopedia and fonts.
- Indian Languages Keyboard
Program: Windows 3.1 and Windows 95;
simplified keyboard assignment and TrueType fonts for use with any
editor (by Avinash Chopde).
- Indian
Language Kit:
Mac OS;
OS level support includes Apple TrueType fonts at any size printable
on QuickDraw and PostScript; supports INSCRIPT; fully ISCII compliant.
Also includes Gujarati and Gurumukhi.
- InProS: Temporarily
disabled (May 14, 1997).
- Krishnasoft Hindi Word
Processor:
Windows 95/98, Windows 3.x, Windows NT, all with at
least 4MB RAM; TrueType full wordprocessor, able to export to
other programs like MS-Word etc, and can import graphics in several
formats. Font set includes Assamese, Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati
and Gurumukhi.
- LaserHindi:
Windows 95, Windows 3.1x, Mac system 6.0.7 or later;
TrueType or Type 1 Devanagari fonts in various sizes; Keyboard mapping
swtichable for ease of typing; Mac versions include Nepali.
- SaralSoft:
Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Mac, Power PC;
scalable Devanagari fonts, point and click typing in Devanagari.

- Thadani:
TrueType fonts. Not checked: any

- Unitype:

multi-language software including translations between supported

The Language, Literature and Songs
- Kaavyaalaya: contains
a selection of poems which constitute a good introduction to modern Hindi
poetry. A set of fonts have to be dowloaded to read most of the material.
