Abstract
I will present a general description of topological insulators from the point of view of the Dirac equation. From the calculation of Z2 indices and solutions of bound states near the boundary I will show that a modified version of the Dirac equation can provide a description of a large family of topological insulators. If time permits I will also discuss some minimal lattice models for topological insulators.
