Marathi theatre started in Bombay in the 1920's, and was closely allied to the freedom movement. The Ganapathi festival, a private worship before being converted by Bal Gangadhar Tilak into a public festival, was the occasion for many plays, usually nationalistic, and certainly of a nature the British would have considered seditious.
