The Mayor is elected by the corporators of the BMC for a period of one year. A largely ceremonial post, the mayor convenes and presides over meetings of the house, the tree authority and various consultative committees. He has no sanctioning power for municipal works.
The Mayor of Bombay is entitled to a bungalow, and official car, and an annual allowance of Rs. 50,000 for entertaining visitors. According to protocol, civic receptions for dignitaries and delegations are to be presided over by the Mayor.
