Fonts and Software

• Proprietary:
  • C-DAC, Pune: Unix, DOS, Windows, Mac; a range of wordprocessing and related software.
  • Deodars Devanagari: TrueType and Type 1 for Windows; 356 characters, originally designed for Sanskrit (cost $50+).
  • Hindi Guru Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or later; Teaches how to read and write Hindi; contains grammar, dictionary encyclopedia and fonts.
  • Indian Languages Keyboard Program: Windows 3.1 and Windows 95; simplified keyboard assignment and TrueType fonts for use with any editor (by Avinash Chopde).
  • Indian Language Kit: Mac OS; OS level support includes Apple TrueType fonts at any size printable on QuickDraw and PostScript; supports INSCRIPT; fully ISCII compliant. Also includes Gujarati and Gurumukhi.
  • InProS: Temporarily disabled (May 14, 1997).
  • Krishnasoft Hindi Word Processor: Windows 95/98, Windows 3.x, Windows NT, all with at least 4MB RAM; TrueType full wordprocessor, able to export to other programs like MS-Word etc, and can import graphics in several formats. Font set includes Assamese, Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati and Gurumukhi.
  • LaserHindi: Windows 95, Windows 3.1x, Mac system 6.0.7 or later; TrueType or Type 1 Devanagari fonts in various sizes; Keyboard mapping swtichable for ease of typing; Mac versions include Nepali.
  • SaralSoft: Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Mac, Power PC; scalable Devanagari fonts, point and click typing in Devanagari. Also see Saral Klik-2 Type.
  • Thadani: TrueType fonts. Not checked: any report will be welcome.
  • Unitype: Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0; multi-language software including translations between supported languages.
  • The Universal Word: Windows 3.1 or Windows 95; multilingual word processor, including mail merging.
  • Vijay: Mac and IBM PC; fonts with phonetic keyboard mapping.
  • Wordmate: Windows 3.0/3.1 or DOS 3.0 or higher; keyboard conversion and fonts for many languages.
• Shareware/Freeware:
  • BharatVani: Windows beta version; (Mac version under development) font set.
  • ITRANS: rather widespread package for transliteration of Indian languages. The home page has links to further information.
  • INSCRIPT: Web developers' version of CDAC-Leap wordprocessor, incorporates the INSCRIPT technology.
  • IWrite32: Windows 95/98/NT 4.0; transliteration tool, basic text editing, fonts and much more.
  • TeX for Hindi: Ftp archives (CTAN UK) for Hindi (Devanagari) TeX. If this link is slow, consult a list of CTAN mirror sites. You can also dowload other fonts usable with the same package. An Usenet post on Frans Velthuis' Devanagari fonts for TeX may also be useful.
  • ttf fonts: Unix, windows several font sets bundled for distribution by Narendra Kohli.

Language Tutorials and Teaching Aids

• Hindi Bhasha: is a wonderful web resource which merges a dictionary and word comprehension test. To use it you'll need Macromedia Flash, which you can download free.
• BharatVani Hindi Teacher: Web pages; lessons on speaking, reading, writing and typing of Hindi; with on-line tests; requires the Bharatvani fonts (see under shareware).
• Hindi Guru: Web pages/CD-ROM the web pages contain some of the material available on CD-ROM.
• Hindi Language tutorials by S. Gambhir of the University of Pennsylvania; the material is copyrighted, but lessons can be dowloaded free.
• Hindi conversation course^N and web material at the Australian National university.
• On-line tutorial for written Hindi.
• Hindi/Urdu dictionary and Thesaurus (by Usman Qazi) grows intermittently.
