Mumbai is home to India's most active arts scene. Some of India's best known artists work in Mumbai. The city's 20 or more art galleries, and large numbers of buyers, specially corporate, attract many of India's artists for shows.
Contemporary Indian art was given direction and form, coincidentally around the time of the country's independence, by two groups of artists. One of these was the Progressive Artists' Group in Mumbai.
