Bombay is the home of some of India's most well-known writers writing in Marathi, Gujarati, as well as English. The number of publications in English has risen sharply in recent years.
The city has a number of interesting bookshops, both for new and second-hand books. The latter are well worth visiting. The number of public libraries is very small.
