Bombay Punch
... the accursed Bombay punch, the shame, scandal and ruin of religion. (Gerald Aungier)
Probably the first recipe for Punch comes from the writings of Gerald Aungier, a vehement opponent of the early British custom of getting drunk on this mixture.
The name comes from the Hindi word panch, meaning five. The eighteenth century Bombay recipe calls for toddy, lime juice, plain water, rosewater and sugar.
