Marine Lines


Immediately north of Churchgate and bordering the crowded inner city, Marine Lines takes its name from the 10 Marine Battalion of the Bombay Pioneers. This battalion, composed of Indian troops led by British officers, was stationed here during the mid-19th century.

However, there has been a crematorium in this area for very much longer, as evinced by the older name Sonapur. At present there are two of these, one using wood and the other a modern electric crematorium. There are also Muslim and Christian graveyards in this area.
